David Marshall - Comic Book Art | The Message
Substance
In addition to my class time, homework, working a shit minimum wage job, I also collaborated with the artists as a writer, inker.
Form
I was still an art student when I wrote and drew this wordless love story. It was first published in the Mass Art Comic Book, but later picked up by Fantagraphics in Street Music.
As you can tell from this spread, I was still trying to coordinate way too many influences. The major forces were modern art theory (paint is paint, the beauty of the mark), graphic design (swiss-based page layout) and classic comics storytelling (Alex Toth, Barry Pre-Windsor Smith).

The Message
(G; Romance) Story and art by David Marshall. Half a world apart (and in a simpler, 1980s pre-Internet, pre-cellphone time), two people find a way to communicate their feelings. Published in Street Music, an urban drama anthology published by Fantagraphic Books.

Connections
Founded to unite Boston-area comics creators for workshops, publishing opportunties, professional development and networking.

An international challenge: independently create a 24-page comic book in 24 continuous hours. No preparation (sketches, designs, plot summaries, etc.) can precede the 24 hour period.

The two most important tools you'll need are pens and ink...
